No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
