The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
